Gerald Finley in the Opera

Gerald Finley

When Gerald Finley last performed on the Main Stage, it led to accolades for the recording of The Flying Dutchman. Now the bass-baritone is back – with an atmospheric Christmas concert featuring a selection of Schumann, Grieg, and Barber's lieder.

Lieder and Christmas songs in beautiful harmony

The international opera star Gerald Finley is making his first solo concert in Norway. To ensure a festive atmosphere, the program includes "Deilig er jorden," "Christmas Carol," and Benjamin Britten's "I Wonder as I Wander."

Large sections of the concert are dedicated to what Finley is particularly known for: the art of song. Accompanying him on piano is Julius Drake.

Critically acclaimed song interpreter

The recording of Robert Schumann's Dichterliebe with Gerald Finley and pianist Julius Drake has received glowing international reviews since its release in 2008. The duo was praised for their "glorious Schumann recital," and their collaboration is often noted as exceptionally fruitful.

With this as a starting point, tonight's concert opens with Schumann's iconic setting of Heinrich Heine's poetry. The strong contrasts between excitement and despair in Heine's writings inspired Schumann to compose some of his most powerful and unforgettable songs.
