If you listen to Elida Almeida's 2026 album Spedju, it quickly becomes clear – all the ingredients are there. The effortless power of her voice, the meeting of established styles and rhythms like funaná, batuque, and morna with something fresh and modern.
Almeida is one of the biggest new stars in Cape Verdean music. She was born on the island of Santiago and grew up singing church hymns. When her father passed away, she contributed to the family's income through a radio program on the local radio station in Maio. She is a tireless advocate for the right to education and left her childhood home to compose songs about love and care. Her fresh, warm voice had an immediate appeal to audiences, and one of her earliest songs was featured in the famous Portuguese soap opera A Unica Mulher. From there, things took off. Her first album, Ora doci, Ora Margos, introduced a vast number of fans to her powerful voice. Her name rang out across Europe, Africa, and North America. On her second album, Kebrada, she asserted her African identity, merging homemade rhythms with a Latin sensibility. She has become a spokesperson for Cape Verde and the voice of a new generation – on albums like Di Lonji, Gerasonobu, and this year's release, she not only blends the past with the present, but she has also honed her craft as a deeply personal singer, mastering the art of the ballad in a sincere, tender, and virtuosic way. Throughout her ten-plus year career, she has visited over 50 countries, won numerous awards, and captured hearts on four different continents – and this fall she will visit Oslo World with her solo project for the very first time.
