The square is also used for concerts, shows, markets and fairs.
Eating, drinking and shopping
There are numerous bars, restaurants and food trucks around the square, some with outdoor tables.
The halls on the west side of the square are home to a few shops and workshops, and there are usually a few market stalls on the square selling clothes and accessories.
History and monuments
The square was laid out in 1846, and was named Nytorvet until 1951, when it was named after Jørgen Young, who owned the premises at that time. Near the centre is a fountain built in the 1990s as a copy of the original fountain from the 1880s.
Monument for fred (="Monument for peace"), 1997, by Hagbart Solløs: seven-metre granite sculpture, with a stone from the bombing of Hiroshima. Arbeiderbevegelsens pionerer (="Pioneers of the labour movement"), 1958, by Per Palle Storm: bronze statue showing a worker.
