Oslo Kunstforening

Oslo Kunstforening is an exhibition venue presenting leading Norwegian and international artists, located in one of Oslo’s oldest buildings, dating back to 1626. The historic setting creates a unique dialogue between contemporary art and architecture, in one of the area’s oldest houses where many original details are preserved. In addition to exhibitions, Oslo Kunstforening also runs an active public program with talks, lectures, workshops, concerts, and more. They also have a bookstore offering art books, tote bags and editions.

Anyone who wishes can become a member and support their work, as Oslo Kunstforening is a member-based association, established in 1836 – the oldest art institution and membership organization in Norwegian cultural life.

Oslo Kunstforening was founded by the poet J. S. Welhaven, bookseller Johan Dahl, and later Prime Minister Fredrik Stang, inspired by Københavns Kunstforening (1825), Kunstverein Dresden (1828), and Kunstverein Düsseldorf (1829). The aim was to establish a permanent exhibition venue for visual art in Norway – several years before the decision was made to establish the National Gallery.
