In the beginning of the 14th century, it was the third largest church in the country, and in the Middle Ages it was the royal chapel.
King Håkon V Magnusson (1270-1319) and his kin were buried there, which gave the church strong symbolic meaning. In 1312, Håkon V gave away his daughter Ingebjørg, his only legitimate child, in this beautiful church, with royal guests, clergymen and the most important Norwegian noblemen present.
