Trier's award-winning films feature Oslo heavily, almost as if the city itself is a recurring supporting character, appearing in four of Trier's movies. The three first movies are even dubbed "The Oslo Trilogy" both by the media and by the film creators themselves.

Oslo is changing a lot, it has grown tremendously as a city, and throughout my films, I try to show its history.
Sentimental value(2025), starring big names such as Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, won the 2026 Academy Award for best international feature film, and has moreover been nominated for over 200 awards and accolades internationally, of which it has won over 70 so far.
While the characteristic wooden house in the Frogner district of Oslo is where a lot of the action takes place, you'll also want to check out the National Theatre, thememorial cemetery Vår Frelsers Gravlund and legendary restaurant Lorry.

Joachim Trier's acclaimed movie The Worst Person in the World(2021)is a touching melancholic comedy about love in our time and the difficult search for purpose in life. It is also filled with stunning Oslo scenery.
Julie, played by Renate Reinsve, is turning thirty and her life is an existential mess. Her older boyfriend, Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie) is pushing for them to settle down. One night she gatecrashes a party and meets the young and charming Eivind (Herbert Nordrum). She eventually throws herself into yet another new relationship, hoping for a new perspective on life. However, she soon comes to realise that some life choices are already behind her...

All of this happens with Oslo as a backdrop. See the great views at the Ekeberg Restaurant and St. Hanshaugen, run through the city and down to the Barcode area to reunite with your new love, or watch the sunrise from Akershus Fortress.
I love that sense of specificity of a place in movies [...] For a filmmaker, it’s a cinematic gift to have a place that you know intimately, that you can film and show to an audience. Oslo is exactly this to me.
InOslo, August 31st (2011), Anders, played by Anders Danielsen Lie, is struggling to come back into society in his mid-thirties after a life impeded by drug addiction. After staying at a rehab facility, he wanders the streets of Oslo, trying to reconnect with friends, family and society in general.
In this film, Oslo and its people play an important role, as they symbolise everything that Anders struggles to connect with. He wanders, seemingly aimlessly, while life passes by as it always does in Oslo.

Follow in Anders' footsteps, in the St. Hanshaugen and Frogner areas. People watch at a café next to the Royal Palace Park, have a drink at Bar Robinet, and cycle down Kirkeveien to reach the famous Vigeland Sculpture park (just don't do it in the same order as Anders, who is drunk while cycling).
The light is very special in Oslo and northern Scandinavia. My editor and my cinematographer are Danish, and they were astonished by the lights of Oslo although Denmark is not far from here.
In Reprise (2006), we follow two young aspiring novelists and friends, Erik (Espen Klouman Høiner) and Phillip (Anders Danielsen Lie). They live in Oslo, and go through the existential struggles of growing up. Success, failure, mental health, friendship, heartbreak and meeting your heroes, among other themes, are all set against that, now well-known, Trier-esque Oslo summer.
See Oslo through Erik and Phillip's eyes by swimming at a beach at Bygdøy, cycling at Briskeby and sitting with your friends on a bench in the Vigeland Sculpture Park. We still recommend safer bike rides than the ones in Trier's films, however, so please keep your eyes open when you ride down from Briskeby fire station towards Frogner.
