Wenche Selmer. What Can You Live Without?

Wenche Selmer cultivated the ideal of a rich life with simple means, perfecting the idea of the Norwegian cabin: unpretentious, functional, and adapted to its location.

The exhibition showcases the works of Norwegian architect Wenche Selmer (1920–1998), often designed and conceived together with her husband Jens Selmer (1911–1995).

For her, the cabin was more than just a building project. It became an ideal for architecture in general and a metaphor for a simple, good life.

Wenche Selmer developed a distinctive architectural language that was both poetic and generous, while remaining almost ruthlessly pragmatic. She often referred to her own projects as inconsequential. Behind the facades of what she called "the little wooden house," the projects were unmistakably modern, with open and efficient floor plans devoid of corridors and an area usage distilled to its essentials.
