Kai Fjell: Good will Prevail
Kai Fjell: The Good Victorious opens at the Henie Onstad Kunstsenter on May 2. The extensive exhibition presents Kai Fjell, one of Norway's most central modernists, showcasing the breadth of a rich artistic career that spans from painting and drawing to scenography and public art.
Kai Fjell (1907-1989) holds a central place in Norwegian art history and has significantly impacted several generations of audiences. His paintings are often immediately recognizable, featuring motifs of women, mothers and children, and symbolically charged figures. At the same time, his artistic body encompasses far more than the well-known motifs.
This presentation looks at Fjell's work from a new perspective, emphasizing the societal and historical contexts in which the art was created. The exhibition features both well-known paintings and lesser-known aspects of his artistic practice, including drawings, scenographies, and works related to three major public decoration projects: the Government Quarter, Bakkehaugen Church, and Fornebu Airport.
The drawings illustrate how Fjell worked exploratively throughout his life, while his scenography offers new insights into a lesser-known but important area of his artistic practice. This is the first time Fjell's scenographic work is highlighted in an exhibition context.
