Edvard Munch and the Chocolate Factory

Experience Edvard Munch's historical decoration of the Freia chocolate factory, along with sketches and works from the museum's collection. The exhibition provides insight into the labor movement and women's liberation during the interwar period, showcasing Munch's enduring interest in the worker as a subject and the changes in the city's social landscape.

Edvard Munch's large paintings for the Freia chocolate factory from 1923 were the first decoration project commissioned for a factory – and the first for a women's cafeteria. When these works are temporarily moved from Freia to MUNCH, you will have the chance to experience them up close, along with a rich selection of sketches and other related works.

Using Munch's Freia frieze as a starting point, the exhibition examines his interest in creating art for public spaces and the broader social context surrounding the commission. At that time, Freia was considered a progressive company that promoted the well-being, health, and welfare of its workers. Two-thirds of Freia's employees were women, and the exhibition highlights women's fight for rights, both as workers and individuals.
